Typical target audience for artist Wiley:

Typical target audience for artist WSTRN:

Both artist have fans from same regions. This is because both artist use the same genre which is grime. Grime is mostly based in London therefore they typical fans are from London or regions closer.  There is a separation in gender as Wiley's typical fan is a male where as WSTRN is female. There is also a separation in age  18-24 for Wiley in comparison to WSTRN 25-39 even though both artist have the same style there are still differences.

Mainstream V Indie

Mainstream v Indie

Independant Label:

  • Advantages - Small and devoted audience, don't rely on mass sales for success, more artistic freedom.
  • Disadvantages - Restricted in deals and agreements as they are linked to a major record label as they can take a lot of control over the company.
Mainstream Label:
  • Advantages - 360 deals with artists so the label have a small percentage of the artists touring, merchandise and labels give the artists more money for doing so.
  • Disadvantages - Record label alter or censored the artists album as they believe it will sell better, control access of distribution.

I think that merchandise and ancillary products are important to the success of the band as they will earn money from the sales of them products, but they are only important to an extent as there are other factors that are much more important. These products are important to the audience as they want to buy their favourite bands merchandise to keep as memories.

Fans can find out information about the bands by social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc.  This helps the band get even more promotion as their target audiences are all young and on social media.

I would rather be signed to a mainstream record label because artists do still have control over their music and touring now that an agreement has been put in place although I believe in some ways they are getting exploited.  Also, mainstream record labels will help get your music more recognised as they can afford expensive distribution tactics such as billboards, adverts, high budget music videos, trailers for the album etc.  Low budget distribution is mainly on social media which also helps a lot to promote the artist.

YouGov Profiler

YouGov Profiler

In the YouGov profilers they talk about the target audiences lifestyle, personality, brands they like, entertainment, online and media.   The main target audience is for teenagers above the age of 18, but younger audiences listen to their music too so the mainstream grime artists try to make their lyrics not too explicit.  The profiles below are other grime artists (male or female) and who their target audience is, it is the same as ours.  Majority of these audiences live in London and have a decent income of 900 pounds+ a month.

Function of a music video

Function of a MUSIC VIDEO

The main function of a music video is to promote the artist by the visuals and to earn the record label money.  Another main function for a music video is to keep the audience entertained by dancing and acting during the video.  Songs are not always straight forward, they have a meaning behind it, so the music video is there to make the lyrics more clear and help the viewer understand the song more which makes them feel connected to the artist.

Best example of a music video
August Alsina - Song Cry

I think this is the best example of a music video because the lyrics have a deep meaning behind it that means something to the artist and the music links well to the song as it is more performance than a story - that fame can't fix the pain he is feeling and how his family had divided over the years. During the song there are scenes where it is raining and I think this links well with the song because the song is sad and the weather is miserable as well.  The location is in a deserted area which shows he is even more alone with this thoughts.  At 3:57 there is blood dripping from this eyes which links to the lyric "I can't hold back these tears".  When he says "They say a man aint supposed to cry so imma let the song cry", he is singing his feelings through his music rather than crying in real life.

I also think this is the best example of a music video because of the camera movements throughout.  There is an establishing shot and then the artist shows up in the shot singing.

RESEARCH- Function of a music video

What's the function of a music video? Add in an analysis of a music video that you consider the best example of a music video and clearly explain why you feel it is a great example.

A music video has many functions, for example: Promoting the artist as the artist is the highlight of the music video by visual aid for the artist and record label to earn money, it is also important to entertain the audience. This is done through the showing off of talent for example dancing and acting for the video is seem more appealing. Providing the viewer with a better understanding of this song is another function. This is because songs are not always straightforward therefore with a music video the artist can get across the idea and vision behind the video to make it much easier for the viewer. Another function is to evoke emotion. This is done by sending messages through the music videos to raise awareness of topics the artists wants to put across.

The best example for a music video is probably into you by Ariana Grande. This is because it has a brief narrative. This is important for the audience to help understand the ideology behind the music video so that they can connect to the song much easier. Another example is that the artist herself in involved in the music video as she is the performer and the narrator. This is a good example because the more the artist is seen the better it is for the artist for promotional purposes. The video is narratively and performance led therefore we see the artist singing and acting and therefore better for the artist as she shows off her talents. The main focus of the music video is the artist. Ariana is seen throughout the music video in which she engages with the audience by breaking the 4th wall and looking into the camera. Which is the best way to engage the viewer. The ratio to performance to narrative is equal which is a good thing about the video as it is balanced.

Previous student video

Previous Student Video that I liked:

Narrative and structure:

During the whole music video there is a strong narrative and structure.  The narrative is told to the audience straight away by the location and props.  The first scene is located in a graveyard and the main prop is flowers - this refers back to what the song is actually about.  Through the facial expression of the artist, you can tell the song is about the loss of someone and it has a deeper meaning.

Media Language:

Editing, camera movement and base tracks are the main use in the music video.  The camera movement is very steady which makes it more appealing to the audience.  Loads of jump cuts are used in the video a lot to introduce the artists. Base tracks are seen throughout the video from all of the artists, mainly the one in the middle of the road.

Audience and Genre:

  • Audience - The main audience is young male adults, this may be because young males can relate to the lyrics more than females.
  • Genre - Grime
